Health benefits of Turmeric and its active ingredient – Curcumin

As the big pharmaceutical companies continually face the issues of drug therapies no longer working as effectively (such as antibiotics), people are looking to natural medicines to not just find a cure for their ills, but also to strengthen their immune systems and live healthier lives using gentler and more comfortable source materials.

Turmeric is probably nature’s greatest cure-all. It provides a protection against some of the greatest diseases on the planet. It is both preventative and curative. Considering what ‘Big Pharma’ would charge us if the full realisation of its value was understood. It would be viewed as a ‘magic pill’, but actually as we now know it, it is far more practical than that.

Since 2000 over 50 clinical trials have tested the active ingredient of Turmeric – Curcumin (the pigment in Turmeric giving it the bright yellow colouring) – against a spectrum of diseases.

They have shown that the spice may play a significant role in preventing lung disease, brain disease and a variety of cancers – including multiple myeloma, colon cancer and pancreatic cancer.

In the latest trial for ulcerative colitis a randomised double blind study concluded that over 50% of patients achieved remission within a month of being provided Curcumin – compared with none of the patients receiving the placebo. Consuming Turmeric with soya potentially offers a double benefit for osteoarthritis sufferers.

So how should you consume it? How much do you eat and in what manner should it be prepared?

The recommendation is to take a quarter teaspoon full a day, with a little black pepper. Black pepper contains a compound called Piperine. One of the effects of this substance is in preventing your liver from actively attempting to rid your body of the Curcumin you have just ingested! (Piperine makes up about only 5% of black pepper). So even the tiniest amount of pepper will significantly increase the Curcumin levels in your blood.

Curcumin will cause your Gall Bladder to contract, squeezing out half of its contents and this is believed to prevent Gallstones forming (if you already have Gallstones, be warned this may be painful!)

Turmeric has been trialled for people suffering from breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, multiple myeloma, chronic myeloid leukaemia and other chronic diseases. Turmeric worked very well, better than Curcumin in its isolated state.
